Hello and welcome to Joe Shows How! Keeping plants happy and healthy requires constant watering, but too much water can be nearly as detrimental as too little. That’s where drip irrigation comes in. It’s an effective way to very slowly water plants to ensure they stay hydrated without overwatering. In this week’s video I show how to make a drip irrigation system for individual plants, shrubs and trees out of a two-liter soda bottle.
First, use a tiny 1/16-inch drill bit to bore a series of holes in the bottom and sides of the bottle. Six or so holes are sufficient. Then, dig a hole beside the plant just deep enough to bury the bottle, but not its neck. Backfill around the bottle with soil, leaving its cap exposed. Now, twist off the cap and use a garden hose or watering can to fill the bottle. Replace the cap and you’re done! Water will slowly drip from the bottle and into the soil to hydrate and the plant’s root system. You can even add fertilizer to the bottle, if you’d like. Depending on the plant and weather, you may need to refill the bottle every three days or so.
Hope you find this landscaping tip useful, and be sure to stay tuned to the end of the video for a Bonus Tip on selecting shovels and other long-handled gardening tools. Thanks for watching and for your continued support!
